Recommended Workstations

Unix Computing recommends that users who want to buy new Windows or Macintosh computers purchase one of the recommended bundles available from the Campus Computer Stores. We find that these computers are the easiest to set up and maintain for the Desktop Support staff, which means they're the best way to make sure your computer is working right when you need it.

For new Linux workstations, we recommend a computer with at least the following configuration:

  • CPU: AMD Athlon XP or Intel Pentium IV CPU
  • Memory: 512MB RAM
  • Disk: 40GB internal ATAPI hard disk drive
  • Case: Mid-tower chassis
  • CD-ROM: NEC DVD-RW
  • Floppy: 1.44MB floppy disk drive (Optional)
  • Display: Most any standard display will work
  • Graphics: ASUS V8420/TD AGP4X, Geforce4 Ti4200, 128MB DDR, DVI/RGB, OpenGL 1
  • Ethernet: Intel Pro/100S fast ethernet adapter, or 3Com 10/100 card
  • Keyboard: Standard PS/2 101-key keyboard
  • Pointer: Most any standard mouse will work
  • Power: Best Power Patriot 250 UPS 3

We like the computers from the following companies as they come preinstalled with Linux and are therefore guaranteed compatible. Note: Pogo Linux will preinstall our Debian Linux distribution install which does tend to save some time.

We do not recommend a Dell from the Campus Computer Store for Linux workstations, as we have had too many problems with them in the past due to proprietary hardware that is not fully compatible with Linux.

[1] The choice of video card is extremely critical for those users who want to use XWindows. For this reason, if you vary from the recommended card, it is extremely important that you verify the new card's compatibility first. Check with Unix Computing if you need help.

[2] The power at the University is prone to brownouts. An uninterruptible power supply, or UPS, is a necessity for anyone who requires that their host is stable.
