JFIhome file server

===================
JFI Home Directories:
File Server "jfihome"
===================

The is probably the most end-user visible machine in our computer room, since not only do our home directories depend on it, many other machines do too.

Jfihome is a FreeBSD file server with a 2TB disk array, which is not that much considering how recently it was bought. (The capacities of current hard drive technology grow too fast to keep up with.) There is still plenty of expansion room though. The system has four processors and 4GB of memory.

Most of our department-managed Linux desktops have NFS-mount connections to jfihome, either to actually get their home directories from there, or in the case of some machines that use their local disks instead, under /nfs to allow for convenience access even when it is not mounted as /home.

Also, many department managed Windows machines get home directory service via Samba, and Macs can connect over AFP from "connect to server" in the Finder as afp://jfihome/.

All user home directories are backed up twice a day on our backup server penrose.
