Who we are
We have two people on our team: Brent Busby (brent@jfi.uchicago.edu, 2-0091, RI-127), and Paul Lauss (plauss@jfi.uchicago.edu, 2-2588, RI-135). Generally it's best to contact us using our official email address: manager@jfi.uchicago.edu.

What we do
We provide system support and advice for UNIX and UNIX-like systems in JFI, MRSEC, and the EFI in the Physical Sciences Division. If you would like us to run a UNIX-like system for you, or if you would like us to assist you or a system administrator in your group, please contact us at manager@jfi.uchicago.edu.

We are the primary systems administrators for the JFI and MRSEC web, mail, and file sharing services, and the EFI cluster. We also maintain UNIX systems in the CIS E124 public lab (Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows).

How to use our services
Send email to manager@jfi.uchicago.edu. If you're asking for help with a problem, send as many details of the problem as possible, including the precise text of any error messages (copy and paste if possible).

You can call us or knock on our door as well, but generally speaking, email is the best way to reach us. We are frequently away from our desks and phones, and by emailing us, you create a tangible record of the service issue that we can refer to.

When we're here
Our hours of operation are 9-5, Monday through Friday. We do carry pagers which are automatically alerted in the event of system outages.

However, we are not necessarily in our offices during the day; we may be working on a machine, visiting a customer, dragged kicking and screaming to a meeting, or deliberately hiding from you just to be difficult. Send email to manager@jfi.uchicago.edu and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Office Hours
We recognize that some issues are best hashed out in person, and it's nice to have a face to go with a name; so we keep office hours. We will be here at these times and we will answer our door if you knock.
